Three passengers gradually came forward to report serious burn wounds on the buttocks after riding a number 31 bus in Oslo on Tuesday, March 6. On Thursday Aftenposten.no got another call about the incident that has baffled doctors and transport officials.
A 32-year-old woman called Aftenposten.no and said that she too had suffered burn wounds after riding the 31 bus, but that her trip had occurred exactly a week earlier, on the morning of Feb. 27th.
The woman said that she felt a pain in her rump while sitting on the bus, and it was sharp enough to force her to only sit on the right side of her bottom. When she returned home she discovered a wound.
"It was a black lump the size of a cherry. At first I thought I had gotten the world's biggest pimple," she said. Like the other victims, the woman's clothes were undamaged.
She understood the connection after reading the articles on the steadily growing mystery at Aftenposten.no.
"My injury was exactly the same place as the others, and it was very painful," the woman said. She was 95 percent certain she was riding a 31 bus, but her trip is also trafficked by the number 30, so there is an element of doubt.
Police inspector Bjørnar Gilberg at Grønland police station in downtown Oslo said the case was a tough one to investigate.
"We have no clues to follow," Gilberg told Aftenposten.no, and said that the police were now assessing what kind of resources they could devote to an investigation.
"We take this matter seriously but we have many other cases that are even more serious, for example serious assault cases, that we have to prioritize," Gilberg said.
The Oslo Transport bus companies have not been able to explain the injuries and say they need expert assistance.
