Lordy, lordy, look who's forty!

It's his birthday. The big person not the little person. He's 40. That used to seem very very old. But not so much anymore. He doesn't look old to me. He doesn't act old to me. So he's not old, right?

This morning when I was giving him his birthday hug and kiss, the thought in my head was I would like to have 40 more times like this.

This is one of my favorite pics of him.

I was reading someone's blog this morning who I will not name because she wants her blog to be a little more private and I can totally respect that since I would like mine to be as well. I was reading some of her posts from the past few days talking about marriage and it reminded me of some thoughts that I have had swirling around in my head recently.

When or how does the love go away in a marriage/relationship? Do you just wake up one day and realize that it has been six months since you kissed your significant other or nine months since you said "I love you"? How does that happen? Do you just get caught up in the everyday stuff and forget? What has to happen to get you to the point that you don't touch the other person? And why are you content to stay that way? Is it less work to let it go on the way that it has become and not try to get back to where you were? Do you just not like the person anymore and so you don't want to try? I truely don't understand.

Random Question #3

The first time you had your shoes taken off - how surprised were you to see that you still had toes?

Today's random question generated by blogger. Where to start on this one. O.K. so I don't remember the first time I had my shoes taken off (who does?) and I don't recall ever hearing of such a story from my mom (perhaps I should ask her) but it did remind me of other times when I was young and my shoes were involved. So here goes.

Story One: I must have been about 4 years old because I wasn't in school, we were living in Alabama and I was at the bank alone with my mother. Either we were standing in line for a long time at the bank or I had been sitting funny in the car but my foot had fallen asleep and was now waking up so it was all tingly. I recall not understanding what was wrong with my foot and so I sat down on the floor in the bank to take off my shoe because I thought perhaps there were some flys or bees in there buzzing around and they needed to be released. I remember being very disappointed that they were not in my shoe.

Story Two: I was a little bit older but not much because we were still living in Alabama. But I think I was in kindergarten so I must have been 5 years old. My mom was in the hospital because she had a very bad stomach ulcer so my dad was taking care of us. Either I was taking a long time getting my shoes on or he thought I needed help so I remember sitting on the couch and my dad trying to put my shoes on me. The problem was that even at that young age, my OCD tendancies and my peculiar skin sensitivities had emerged. So part of putting on my shoes was making sure that the seam of the sock that runs along the top of my toes was in the exact right spot so that it didn't irritate my feet. My dad did not know that the line needed to be perfect so he was just putting on my socks basically the way they needed to be and putting on my Cabbage Patch velcro shoes. I remember thinking that this was something special that my dad was doing to help me and so I should just let him do it and then I could go back and fix it later on when he wasn't looking. I was worried about hurting his feelings. Hmmm. That probably speaks volumes about my relationship with my dad. It also strikes me that we are not giving enough credit to the four running around my house as to how much goes on in their little heads and how aware they are of their surroundings.

O.K. this has gotten a little to deep so I'm done for right now.

Typical

I posted a message on a forum for Harley Davidson owners yesterday because I am trying to help my dad pick out a new head unit for his motorcycle. I wanted to make sure that what we pick out will fit since I would be getting it with my employee discount and that makes it non-returnable. So I post the following message:

My father has a 1995 Ultra Classic Electra Glide and he needs to replace his head unit. I work for an electronics company so I am trying to get one for him but I do not know the dimensions of what would fit and if there are any additional adapter pieces that would be needed to install it. My company doesn't do head units specific for motorcycles but it is my understanding that it should be a standard size so most single din head units should fit. Has anyone replaced their head unit with an aftermarket unit and if so, what did you use? Thanks!

Someone wrote a response because they were confused about what I was calling a head unit. For those of you that don't know, a head unit is your radio/cd player in your car. Anyways so this was a response further down to the question of what I was referring to when I said "head unit".

He's talking about the radio

Nice. So either I "sound" like a boy or this person could not fathom that a girl would post something like this. Either way, it's not good. My mini van could squash his Harley.

OCD Habit #156

There are certain number sequences that make me happy for no other reason than they are unexplicably pleasing for me to look at. I like seeing things like this:

1.) On my odometer: 98889, 70000, 71017, etc.

2.) At the gas pump: $15.00, $20.25, $31.50, etc.

3.) At my job when I am working with purchase orders: 72127, 72727, 69696, etc.

I think it is the patterns that I like. But it is also the "evenness" of numbers like at the gas pump when I know if I went inside to pay, I would only have to use one quarter or two quarters, etc.

Rick called me the other day because he was driving my van and it hit 100,000 miles and I wasn't there to see it. I was very sad. He understood. That's why he called me. That's why I love him.

Last week I was pumping gas in my van and I have tried to just let the pump go and not overfill it by getting to the next quarter and so I set it up and then walked away. I heard the click when it was full and I walked back over and it had stopped at $34.00. That was a good day.

Last night I went to the grocery store to buy mozzarella cheese for sandwiches for school lunches and I also bought a seltzer water for Rick. When the lady totalled my order, it came to $5.00 including the tax. That made me happy.

You guys have strange habits too right? It's not just me, is it?

Someone get me a time machine!

Looking at people's myspace pages are usually bittersweet for me. I like to see how my friends are doing and what's going on in their worlds. And usually it makes me remember good/funny/enjoyable times that I spent with them.

Then there are other times when I am feeling not so nice. It usually happens around the same time that my PMDD rears it's ugly head. Which by the way I don't know for sure that I have but I like to self-diagnose. So back to the original topic. The past couple of days, I have been feeling very PMDD. Last night, I was home alone and I started messing around on myspace. And I found someone's page that I knew at Andrews. And she had lots of pics on there in a slideshow. And the pics were from her wedding mostly. And it made me unreasonably happy to see that one of her bridesmaids, a girl that was not nice to me at Andrews, has not aged well. I normally try to stay away from those types of thought patterns but as soon as I saw her, I started laughing. And you can't really judge me too harshly on this one because this girl was mean to me when she really had no reason to. I've thought a long time about why a lot of people were mean to me in college and most of them had a very good reason. I was a bitch, annoying, mean to them, etc. But this girl really had no reason. So when I saw her in those pics looking like Megan Mullally and not in a good way (think about those Will and Grace seasons when she was just a smidge too big), it made me happy. Now, I know that we are all getting older and time is not nice but damn it was good to see those pictures!

Then I clicked on someone else's myspace, a friend of this person who I also knew at Andrews, and I started looking at her pics. And I got angry again. There were multiple pics of this person and her friends drinking. Not getting smashed drinking but just having a glass of wine with dinner. And it made me remember all those times I was CRUCIFIED for having a drink when we would go out to dinner and I was over 21. The hypocrisy makes me want to find a time machine and go back to those times and punch them all in their self-rightous faces. I guess that is one of the reasons why I am not an adventist anymore. So to get myself out of that funk, I clicked back over to the first girl to look at her Megan Mullally bridesmaid. And I was happy again.

OCD Habit #345

I had a moment of awareness this morning. I have a lot of semi-OCD habits. So as I think about them or notice them, I will share them with you. Here is the one I noticed this morning.

When I make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I must do the following steps in the following order every single time.

1. lay down a paper towel or a cutting board.

2. take two pieces of whole wheat bread and lay them side by side on the paper/cutting board.

3. place the peanut butter jar directly above the left piece of bread and the jelly jar directly above the right piece of bread.

4. put peanut butter on the left piece of bread and then put jelly on the right piece of bread. and it has to be in that order. can't do jelly first.

I discovered that this morning because I had been stirring a new jar of peanut butter (even though it is a pain, the all natural stuff is the only way to go) and I set the new jar next to the right piece of bread. And it stressed me out until I figured out that I needed to put it above the left piece of bread.

They're everywhere

I had a dream last night that S'Mores and Bomber chewed out of their cages and had crazy hamster sex which produced multiple litters of babies that were born and aged 1 week overnight so that when I woke up and walked into the living room the next morning, there were hamsters all over the place in my house. Cute little baby hamsters.

I was happy.

Rick was not.

Then I woke up.

Alright already

I discovered this morning that I have significantly reduced the time it takes for me to get ready in the morning by so much, the other grownup in my house takes longer and he's a boy. As a personal record, that's great but now it means that I am in a reverse role. I am sitting and waiting for someone to get ready rather than the other way around. Of course, I have cut my routine down to the bare minimum and not really fixing my hair or putting on makeup has really taken my time down. When I was a freshmen in college, it would take me an hour and a half to get ready in the morning. Yep. That's a long time. I can get out the door in 15 minutes now. That's the time from getting out of bed, taking a shower, putting on my contacts, brushing my teeth and hair and getting on clothes and shoes. That's pretty amazing. I eat breakfast at work and drink my coffee at work too. That used to take up a lot of my time in the morning.

In other news, my bedmate decided last night that it is too hot to have the mattress topper on our bed now. That makes me extremely sad. It was my most favorite thing about our bed. It was like sleeping on top of a big pillow. We are still negotiating it's removal. If I can figure out a way to make it so he isn't too hot while he's sleeping or configure the softy thing so it is just on my side then we will both be happy. I'm trying to think creatively. I need my softy back.

While watching SATC last night on TBS, there were a couple of commericals for Yaz, a new birth control pill that is supposed to help you not be a bitch before your period. Apparently there is something other than PMS. It's called PMDD and it seems that I may have it. Along with all the women in my family. Or so it seems whenever we get together for family events and we are all PMSing. Oops, I guess we would need to say that we are PMDDing. Doesn't have the same ring. So all I heard this morning from slowpoke was, you should take Yaz, you should take Yaz, you should take Yaz. Alright already. I get it.

How I spent my Saturday night

Free wine + someone's 50th birthday = hangover on Sunday w/sore feet.

That's me in the black dress dancing with the birthday girl in the flowered shirt.

We had a good time.

Eating Disorder

One of the hamsters, S'Mores, has a problem. He eats in his sleep. Well, that's not quite true. He wakes up, stretches a bit, gets some water and then curls back up in his sleeping hole. He has previously hidden food around his sleeping hole so he dozes off and starts eating. I have pictures to prove it. See?

Random Question 04-02-07

This is the random question that blogger generated for me today:

How is an ankle unlike a consequence?

WTF? I don't understand.

BoKlok

I want one...BoKlok.

This is an example of that saying "If you have a unique idea, there are six other people in the world having the same idea." or some crap like that. Anyways, I had this idea a couple of years. I guess someone in Sweden was having the same idea.

See what's next...

That's what my title means in case you were wondering...
